The Taj Mahal

The Taj Mahal

What's best than visiting the symbol of love, the Taj Mahal with the love of your life? Newly developed Yamuna expressway is definitely a boon for people living in Delhi and want to visit The Taj Mahal, Agra. We left in the morning and as soon as we hit the expressway, I thanked God that I will not have to play with trucks anymore and I could almost fly my car. In just 2 hours, we reached Agra, Uttar Pradesh and coudn't wait to go to Taj Mahal. On arrival, we were asked to remove our shoes or we could wear polythene bags on our shoes to avoid the white marble getting dirty. We hired a guide who taught us some interesting facts about the Taj Mahal.

Built in 1653 by twenty thousand artists and craftsmen, it took 21 years to complete. Taj Mahal is made completely of marble and after completion, Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan ordered to cut the hands of all the artists and craftsmen so that no one can build a similar piece of art ever again. It was added to UNESCO world heritage site in year 1983. Taj Mahal is also known as white marble mausoleum.

The legend has it that Shah Jahan's third wife Mumtaz Mahal, died during the birth of their 14th child Gauhara Begum in 1631. After her death, Shah Jahan decided to built Taj Mahal in her memory and construction was started in year 1932. The emperor Shah Jahan described the Taj Mahal in his own words:

Should guilty seek asylum here,
Like one pardoned, he becomes free from sin.
Should a sinner make his way to this mansion,
All his past sins are to be washed away.
The sight of this mansion creates sorrowing sighs;
And the sun and the moon shed tears from their eyes.
In this world this edifice has been made;
To display thereby the creator's glory...

Soon the sun dragged us out of the Taj Mahal as we could not bear the scorching heat and the white marble started to get hotter and hotter by each passing moment.

We said Bye to this beautiful wonder and once again, my car was ready to fly.
