Homes of Jaisalmer (Rajasthan)

Courtyard of a Jaisalmer House
The Golden city of Rajasthan, Jaisalmer is named after its founder Maharawal Jaisal Singh. Jaisalmer means "the hill fort of Jaisal". It is known as the golden city because of yellow sand and yellow sandstone used in the architecture which gives golden-yellow look.

Most of the part of this golden city is part of Thar desert, also known as The Great Indian Desert. The temperature is usually high during the day time and nights are pretty cold. In summers the temperature can go as high as 50 degrees which becomes unbearable for human habitation, yet people continue to live and prosper. They have designed the houses in such a way that they provide cool and soothing effect in summers. Made out of woods and mud, they are the most successful way to beat the heat in summers.

A Regular Household

The scorching heat of the desert reminded me of one of my favorite track which suited best at this place since I was the only one who was feeling uncomfortable in the heat, locals were totally cool as they are used to it, it's there home after all.

Oh I come from a land, from a faraway place
Where the caravan camels roam
Where it's flat and immense
And the heat is intense
It's barbaric, but hey, it's home!

Trying to get the feeling!

These houses are perfect example of great architecture for several hundered years. Besides being an example of great engineering and architecture, people have shown their artistic side too by painting on the walls giving an elegant look.

Despite being a dry region and scant rainfall, people have managed to live here for years. They love this place despite all these factors, they live happily.

Well, no wonder someone has said, where there is a will, there is a way!
