Do you know that Airlines fly planes slower today than they did in the past, making it longer for you to get to your destination? Yes, despite enhancement in technology and super fine engines, it takes us longer to reach our destination now. In 1973, it took 2 hours and 37 minutes to reach Houston, Texas from NYC and now it takes 3 hours and 50 minutes to cover the same distance.
Well, the answer is simple, Fuel Efficiency. Airlines are able to save millions on fuel by flying slower.
From 2002 to 2012, the price of fuel has gone up from $0.70 per gallon to over $3.
According to a press release in 2008, JetBlue saved around $13.6 million a year by adding just under 2 minutes additional to each flight.
Moreover, airlines are trying to make their airplanes lighter to save more on fuel and hence they charge you extra on excess baggage.
Airlines also follow a practice known as 'Block Padding' which means adding extra few minutes to actual arrival time so that they can appear 'Punctual'. So next time if you hear an in-flight announcement that you will be landing ahead of schedule, don't be fooled 😉
