I stepped out of my apartment on my first weekend in the city to explore my surroundings where I will be spending next couple of months. As I walked along the South Bank of the river Thames enjoying the most cherished, British Summers, I reached the most famous landmark of London, The London Eye. This giant Ferris wheel is the center of attraction and there was a huge queue to get on to that. As a matter of fact, it is the most popular paid tourist attraction with 3.5 million tourists annually.
The London eye has 32 air-conditioned capsules and each capsule can hold upto 25 people who can freely walk inside while watching the view of the city or can sit as well.
It was erected in 1999 and it used to be world's highest Ferris wheel. Then its height was surpassed by the Ferris wheel of Singapore, known as Singapore Flyer and then by High Roller in Las Vegas. Though it is still the highest Ferris wheel in Europe. The London Eye is supported by A-Frame on one side only which makes it unique and as described by its operators, it is the world's tallest cantilevered observation wheel. You can see the pillar in the image above.
